Auto industry Looking Beyond Present Crisis

Confidence in the future of the local automotive industry is proven by the unprecedented interest in the four-day trade show that forms part of the 2009 South African Automotive Week (SAAW), says organiser Andrew Binning of Inkanyezi Events.

“Nearly 50 per cent of the available exhibition space is already taken by both local and international companies. Considering that 75 per cent of the space was booked less than two months prior to the first SAAW in 2007, this is a remarkable achievement,” says Binning.

SAAW chairperson Alfred da Costa says this interest shows that the auto industry has a long-term vision, and is working on mapping the way forward as the market recovers.

Running from October 7 to October 10 in Port Elizabeth, the trade show forms part of the second bi-ennual South African Automotive Week, that includes a “Navigating the Storm: A roadmap to Vision 2020” conference hosted by the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC).

According to Binning, the show has attracted international interest, with companies from Taiwan, Holland and India booking space. French, Indian and Chinese pavilions were also being planned.

Locally, there has been a “lot of interest, particularly from the original equipment manufacturers who need to be supported by a strong local components industry,” says Binning.

SAAW is the only auto industry conference and trade show officially endorsed and supported by both the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) and the National Association of Automotive Components and Allied Manufacturers (NAACAM) in South Africa.

The second bi-ennual South African Automotive Week takes place in Port Elizabeth from October 7 to October 10. For more information go to www.saaw.co.za.
